Hanging Around Books' nineteenth release (HA019), “Echo & The Bunnymen : Heaven Up Here 1980-87” features rare and previously unseen photographs of the Bunnymen taken by Andy Phillips during their 1980s rise to fame and glory.
As Andy writes in his introduction to the book:
"June 1980 saw the release of Echo and the Bunnymen’s debut album, ‘Crocodiles’. They toured the UK extensively and I soon found myself travelling the country to take live pictures of my new favourite band. This, however was no easy task. The band’s performances were swathed in dry ice, lit by harsh crowd-facing back lights and featured the copious use of strobes. At some shows, I would end up with only three or four usable images, so back I would go to try again. I didn't mind of course because, as they got to know me, I was allowed to shoot from anywhere I wanted. This did give me some unique pictures, many of which you can see here for the first time. The band were also playing magnificently throughout this period. This all culminated in January 1981 with the show at Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens where the 'Camo' set was launched. Forward to 1987. By then, I held the photography account for HMV, so when the band played on the roof of the London Bond Street store, I was there to cover it. As is often the case, a few pictures were chosen for press use and the others got filed away. So here - again for the first time - are the best of the rest."
