It was Friday, March 18th 1983. The location, Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire and Marillion were about to play their third headlining show at the legendary Friars club venue.

Their debut album, “Script For A Jester’s Tear” had been released earlier that week, and I - accompanied by "Time Out" magazine’s music editor John Gill - had arranged to photograph and interview them at this, their homecoming show.

After John's pre-gig chat with Fish and Mark Kelly, I shot the make-up sequence with Fish - the dressing room lights being perfect for this. Then followed the show where the band received a nothing short of rapturous response from the crowd.

After a very long night’s drinking with a certain member of the band back at our hotel - no prizes for guessing who, folks - we then all met up somewhat bleary-eyed the next morning when the band shots in Market Square were taken. The band’s label EMI had expressed interest in using one of the pictures for promotional purposes but the sudden exit of drummer Mick Pointer a few weeks later scuppered that idea. So this was a crucial point in time in the band’s history which I am so pleased I managed to document.
